New vs. Used Forklifts

New forklifts typically cost anywhere from $20,000 to $40,000.  But buying a new forklift is much like buying a new car - prices can be all over the map because each forklift has a different set of features and is intended for a different use.  If you were looking for a work truck, you wouldn't buy a Mini Cooper.  The same is true with forklifts.  For more industrial uses and higher weight capacities and lift distances, costs can range even up to $80,000.

By contrast, used forklifts can often offer a great value, as it is common to find lightly used equipment that still has plenty of "mileage" left on it.  The average price paid for used forklifts ranges from $5,000 to $12,000 - again depending on the various specifications.  Certainly there are exceptions that fall on either side of this range as well.

Renting vs. Buying Forklifts

If you plan to use your forklift indefinitely, buying often makes the most sense.  But there are times when renting is more practical.  Certainly when you only have a seasonal overflow need, but depending on your cash flow situation, growth expectancy, and other factors, renting may indeed be a viable option.  Most companies go into this decision knowing if they wish to rent (lease) or buy, but if you are not sure, then we recommend requesting pricing information for both options so that you can compare.

Gasoline vs. Electric Forklifts

Electric forklifts are generally prefered for lighter useage since there is no gasoline to have to buy and store.  Also, electric forklifts tend to be preferred for indoor usage due to lower emissions.  For heavier useage, heavier weight capacity, and/or outdoor usage, a gasoline powered forklift is typically your best bet.  However, once again, we recommend pricing out a couple of different options and speaking with your sales rep about your particular need and how you plan to use your forklifts, and they can advise you on the various options.
